In his home in Chicago, Hurstwood reads in the newspaper a comical account of a baseball game that had taken place between Chicago and Detroit (Chapter XXII).

After Hurstwood has stolen the money from Fitzgerald & Moy's he runs to a Drug Store and places a telephone call to Michigan Central Depot to enquire about the times of trains to Detroit. Hurstwood tricks Carrie into leaving Chicago with him. They leave from Michigan Central Depot and the front carriages of thier train terminate in Detroit. The train leaves Chicago at 3am and arrives in Detroit at noon the following day. The back carriages of the train go on to Montreal and Hurstwood buys two tickets in Detroit for Carrie and himself to travel on to Canada (Chapter XXVII - XXVIII).
